What is a coach?
Coaching, especially Life or Wellness coaching can be defined in many ways. I like to take a basic approach. Essentially a Coach is someone who relates personal or institutional opinions, belief systems, values, recommendations or guidance about certain situations relayed in some context to another person, group or party. This advice is often offered as a guide to action and/or conduct. Let’s put it even more simply – Advice is a recommendation about what might be thought, said, or otherwise done to address a problem, make a decision, or manage a situation.
Talk more about the concept of giving advice.
Many expressions and quotations have been used to describe the status of advice, whether given, or received. One such expression is “Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t.” (Erica Jong, How to Save Your Own Life, 1977). Advice is like water, you drink it to replenish your soul.
What are your thoughts about Ms. Jong’s opinion concerning advice?
This particular quotation pertains to the belief system that states that the answers to one’s questions are within themselves, and do not come from any external stimuli. It has a nice pop psychology sensiblity to it but I think it is a limited point of view. In my experience there are times when each of us needs professional advice on how to make effective and efficient choices. In these time a professional advisor can be invaluable. Many experts on counseling would agree with me. The accuracy of Ms. Jong’s particular belief is often disputed among theologians, philosophers, etc. However, a person who would hold such a belief, is usually the type of person who would “advise” another person to seek the answers out from within one’s own esoteric and inner spiritual natures.
How can one know if they are receiving good advice?
There is no sure way to know. Advice when adhered to and followed may be beneficial, non-beneficial, damaging, non-damaging, partially beneficial and partially damaging, in reference to personal or social paradigms. In other words, not all advice is either “all good” or “all bad”.
Is it wise to give advice that has not been requested?
Generally speaking I would say “no”. Many people consider unrequested advice to be paternalistic and patronizing and are thus offended. Some people may come to the conclusion that advice is better to be left out of the equation altogether unless requested. I also do not give advice unless I know that my information is well researched and reflects the opinion of most respected experts. It has been said that “The best advice is this: Don’t take advice and don’t give advice.” This is also what I tell my corporate chair massage therapists.
