The #1 NYC Chair Massage Company Uses Aromatherapy for Stress Management

When we did a corporate chair massage job during teacher appreciation week in NYC we spoke of the fact that an educator’s emotional well-being is determined by how he or she responds to the surrounding environment. How one responds to different scents is a key factor in most forms of human activity, particularly that which is necessary for social interaction and in corporate chair massage.  Many societies use the scent produced by incense in ritual and religious practice. Combined with repetition, chanting, singing and prayer, a familiar scent can have a powerful influence on an individual or a group. This is, in part, because the aroma functions primarily on a subliminal or subconscious level. The aroma and what an individual or community associates with it may have a direct impact on the emotional centers of the brain without the interference of intellectual or rational thought. These are issues that are still to be addressed as having importance in culturally specific depression.

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of the scents produced by essential oils. These oils are extracted from the flower, leaf, stalk or fruit of a plant, shrub or tree. A pleasant aroma can connect us to a warm deep, content, safe place within ourselves. No one looks forward to being presented with an unpleasant odor. It is for this very reason that cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical, food companies place great importance on specific aromas in certain products.  Menthol scent is often used in various chest rubs and cough drops, lemon is added to many cleaning products and cosmetic companies invest millions in associating certain perfumes and colognes to a celebrity brand.

The powerful sense of smell and the impact of “aromas” on physical and psychological states can be exemplified by the following:

  1. The sense of relaxation and comfort that some of us have upon entering a home during the holiday season.
  2. The strong negative reactions we may have when coming in contact with cigarette smoke or the extreme physical reactions such as “gagging” or “heaving” when coming in contact with a particularly offensive smell.
  3. We may become sexually aroused when we come in contact with a certain aroma which we associate with a specific event or individual.
  4. As adults, many of us have been taught that expressing how we feel emotionally is unacceptable, so in reverting back to an early-life pattern, we may reach for a comfort aroma; maybe a food, candy or some specific environment. Our brains associate the memory brought on by an aroma with the relief of emotional stress.

Giovanni Gatti and Renato Cayola conducted the earliest scientific investigation of the power of aroma to influence emotions and the nervous system in the early 1920s. These Italian physicians published a report, “The Action of Essences on the Nervous System,” which explored the effects of different essential oils on anxiety and depression. After exposing study subjects with oils taken both orally and through inhalation they measured changes in their blood circulation, pulse rate, depth of breathing.

Their results showed for the first time that scents could quickly influence the brain. The study also showed clearly that inhalation of the aromatic oils brought about a much quicker affect than oral administration. Clearly the oils entered the system at a quicker rate when inhaled than through the slower absorptive process of the digestive system. Doctors Gatti and Cayola made note of which oils seemed to have the greatest influence on what we would now classify as manic or depressive patterns.  The essential oils which they identified as sedatives, and most useful for reducing anxiety based, manic behavior included asafetida, chamomile, melissa, neroli, opoponax,  petitgrain, and valerian.

They identified the stimulating oils, best for the treatment of depression, included angelica, cardamom, fennel, and lemon, fennel. The researchers also discovered to their surprise that some essences though stimulating in smaller doses, were sedating when used in larger amounts. They concluded that:

“The sense of smell has, by reflex action, an enormous

influence on the function of the central nervous

system.” *1 Foot Note

The term aromatherpy was coined in  1937 in Rene-Maurice Gattefosse’s  classic work  “Aromatherapie”  and much research on oils had been conducted since then.  In 1962,   R. W. Moncrieff carried out a  systematic study into the effect of aromatic oils aromas on the brain. Using an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine in two different studies he monitored and recorded the brain wave changes to 17 different natural odors.  He found the odors significantly influenced the EEG levels, increasing alpha activity with some oils indicating relaxation, and increasing beta in some subjects indicating stimulation. This important research was later built upon by other researchers.

Important research concerning the influence of essential oils and emotional health was conducted in the 1970s by Prof. Paolo Rovesti of Milan University. on patients who had been diagnosed with hysteria or nervous depression.
