The Best @1 NYC Corporate Chair Massage Company Talks about Aromatherapy and Stress Management

When our chair massage team works at events at the NYC Javit’s Convention Center  we often find people who use aromatherapy as a healing tool

Olfactory Nerves and Smell

Olfactory neurons are unique among most brain cells. Other nerve cells cannot regenerate but when olfactory neurons die they are replaced by fresh cells. Scientists are studying this phenomenon since this may produce information important to the study of brain and spinal cord injuries.  How, they ask, can aroma recognizing cells accomplish what eludes the neurons of the spinal cord or neocortex.

One of the key connections between smell and emotional response lies with tissues in the brain called the olfactory bulbs. Some of their nerve axons extend directly into the limbic system of the brain, the seat of drive, sexuality and the emotions. We are conscious of what we smell faster than what we see or hear.  This is because odor information moves from nose to olfactory bulbs to limbic system, more directly than the route taken by sights and sounds.

Aromatherapy as a therapeutic tool, like music, and color therapy are less powerful tools as we age, for almost invariably we suffer a decline

in our sense of small, hearing and sight.  Concerning our sense of smell, this may be why we develop a taste for spicy foods as we age.  Research shows that spicy food not only stimulates odor receptors (as all food does), by moving from the back of the throat up to the olfactory epithelium but it also stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which controls the muscles of the face and jaw. This tingly sensation, often called a chemesthetic component is independent of taste and smell, and is experienced when eating anything from wasabi (the Japanese horseradish served with sushi), to cayenne pepper, alcohol, and menthol in cough drops.

How an individual reacts to a specific aroma is to a large part cultural, and age related. What is pleasant to one person may be unpleasant to another. There are few smells that people universally find to be pleasant or unpleasant.  Even a person’s career or hobby can influence how they react to a particular smell. For example most of us find the sweet aroma of most fresh cut flowers to be extremely pleasant however this may not be the case for a person employed in the funeral business. They may associate this odor with death and decay.  For some people smell is a biochemical response and for others it is cultural. Whichever the case may be aromas is a powerful healer for emotional trauma and depression.

The Four Emotions

Every day we experience, love and hate and an entire array of feelings, passions, sensibilities and emotions.  In order to be healthy you must express them. Our ability to be in touch with and express our emotions has a large part to play in the types of choices we make. Essential oils when combined with massage, is a precious tool for naturally and easily getting in touch with and healing locked feelings.

Categories of Oils for Aromatherapy Massage

Plant essences act in two ways.  Initially, the essence has either a soothing or an exciting effect on the nervous system.  Your senses react to the aroma of the essence as you would to the aroma of perfume or a flower.  In addition, the chemical composition of each individual essence has its own specific effect on the tissues and organs of the body.

Many emotional problems can be cared for with essential oils, particularly if they are detected and treated early.  Essences can be classified according to function including antispasmodics, antiseptics, stimulants, and sedatives. It is the stimulating and sedating oils that have the strongest effect on the emotions.

Stimulating oils – Cardamon, cedar, cinnamon, fennel, lemon, and ylang ylang. These are best when a person experiences a sense of immobility and is so depressed that they feel as if they can’t even get out of bed

Sedating oils – Cajuput, chamomile, melissa, and peppermint are used to relieve insomnia and nervousness, and manic activity. Clinical study’s into the psychological effects of chamomile oil was carried out recently at Cambridge University and the University of North Wales which confirmed the oil’s soothing effect on the nervous system of humans.

Many of the essential oils used for depression are from flowers and fruits. Many aromatherapists report that any of the following oils may be used to combat depression: Allspice, ambrette, basil, bergamot, Canadian balsam, cassie, cedarwood, clary sage, grapefruit, helichrysum, jasmine, lavender, melissa, neroli, orange, patchouli, rose, rosemary, rosewood, thyme, violet, ylang ylang.

Though you may experience almost immediate benefits from aromatherapy when combined with therapeutic massage a consistent stabilization of the symptoms of depression is difficult to achieve in less than a few months.  Impatience and frustration can even aggravate the depression and make your client impatient, irritated, and anxiety-ridden. Be patient
