In many of the courses I teach on power and influence to my chair massage clients my students often think I am a psychic. Believe me I am not. However I am skilled at reading non-verbal skills. I learn much of what I know through the work of the Amazing Kreskin and Marc Salem, two master stage mentalists.
Mentalist: A person who is highly skilled at predicting human behavior. According to Marc Salem, someone who has greatly influenced my own work as an influencer, In the hands of a game theorist, these skills are based on three factors.
- Observing: This means closely watching for the visual ingredients of deception and learning how to recognize facial expression, body language and gestures.
- Listening: for what normally goes unheard. This includes developing the systematic ability to pick up vocal tones, sudden changes, unconscious sounds, word choices, pauses and silences.
- The ability to effectively, efficiently, and productively interpret, meaning. This includes comparing current behavior to what has been seen and heard before. Finding inconsistency in an action is the challenge and the key. An inconsistency is often more significant than the action itself.
These are all skills that can be invaluable to the individual seeking to be more efficient, effective and productive.
