How does trauma’s lead to these so-called energetic imbalances?
By influencing body rhythms, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid
and other bodily functions that connect to the position of cranial
bones , and the  position of sacral bone at the base of the spine.

Body/mind integration is a social paradigm that teaches that when the body is in a healthy state the emotions reflect that, and vice – versa?
A skilled body/mind based massage therapist may combine various counseling and emotional balancing techniques with both massage and special exercises designed to help a person get in touch with his/her tensions and release them through appropriate movement.

This integration of body/mind techniques has existed in one form or another for thousands of years. Much of the work in this area that is being explored and applied today is based on the ideas of Wilhelm Reich, a controversial psychiatrist and early associate of Sigmund Freud’s. Reich’s work was later expanded upon by many others among the most prominent being Alexander Lowen, M.D., and John C. Pierrakos M.D. who created a system known as Bioenergetic Therapy.
Practitioners of emotional release bodywork specifically massage or manipulate physical tissue to release emotional trauma. Many traditional massage therapists are resistant to this type of work because it brings other techniques into the massage session that are technically not massage. Also it is difficult to scientifically prove that this form of massage or bodywork heals or releases an emotion since it is difficult to define and isolate emotions.  Clearly, touch does reduce stress and the effects of trauma and offers many other psycho-physical benefits.

There are a number of theories that exist relating to the how massage can influence the emotions. There are for instance hands-on techniques that consist of a rolling motion on the skin and long, as well as deep manipulation of muscle and bone.  It is believed that such techniques when applied by a skilled practitioner promote the release of emotional tension and trauma and clear the way for positive emotions.

There are many techniques including Qi balancing, acupressure techniques with massage style movements, yoga, emotional release techniques, and movement re-education with the specific purpose of influencing mental functions. There are some systems of massage and manipulation that specifically seek to promote greater access to the functioning of each hemisphere of the brain. One of the first scientists to explore advanced massage techniques to address the emotions was Ida Rolf whom created the massage/bodywork technique known as Rolfing, Originally known as structural integration Rolfing involves deep massage and muscular/connective tissue manipulation. It was Rolf (1896-1979), a researcher at the Rockefeller Institute.  Rolf drew on her extensive knowledge of Hatha yoga to investigate the effect of structure on physical and emotional function.  Rolf’ believed that rather than coercing the body into submission, the body should be encouraged to do what it really wants to do, work with, not against gravity.  Moshe Feldenkrais has stated “when Ida Rolf integrates structure, as nobody else can, she improves functioning….  Rolfing was a revealing and unforgettable experience for me.”

Another approach to connecting touch to the emotions is through cranial-sacral bodywork. There are many theories on this, many of them conflicting. Essentially it is believed by practitioners of this work that connective tissue inside the mouth reflects stress in the cranial bones. This reaction can influence structure and function in the entire body in a domino type effect.  Step by step reflected cranial stress can lead to pain and disorders of the neck and imbalances in the skull. The masseter and buccinator muscles in the jaw may become tight from years of clenching in anger or withholding tears or other emotional responses.
Integrating western kinesiology – the mechanics of movement with theories related to Qi, the emotions, and cellular memory, is an ongoing conversation with no definitive answer. The key is to create templates that merge different models of the body and mind.
