Massage and Somatic Injuries:

When learned and applied under the guidance of a well trained and skilled movement or somatics teacher  These techniques can transform your life however as with many things we often decide to learn on our own or take unnecessary risks with our bodies. When this happens the result is often injury.

The six most common injuries related to movement, exercise and somatics are:

  1. Ankle sprain
  2. Groin pull
  3. Hamstring strain
  4. Shin splints
  5. Knee injury: Patellofemoral syndrome — injury resulting from the repetitive movement of your kneecap against your thigh bone
  6. Tennis elbow(epicondylitis)

One of the most effective, efficient and productive ways to to prevent and treat these common injuries is through massage.

Sometimes preventing common injuries is beyond our control, but often these injuries can be prevented with a regular program of massage.

Some massage therapists get specialized training and are able to collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Depending on the statutes in their state of residence some of these massage therapists may also be certified as athletic trainers. Here their skills encompass the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities in the musculoskeletal system.

These specially trained massage therapists and trainers are skilled to:

  • Apply protective or injury-preventive devices such as tape, bandages, and braces
  • Recognize and evaluate injuries
  • Provide first aid or emergency care after an injury.
  • Develop and carry out rehabilitation programs for injured inividuals
  • Plan and implement comprehensive programs to prevent injury and illness among students and teachers of somatics.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as keeping records and writing reports on injuries and treatment programs

Services rendered by these massage therapists take place in a wide variety of settings and venues, including actual dance schools, yoga centers, martia;l art academies, athletic training facilities, primary schools, universities, inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation clinics, hospitals, physician offices, community centers, workplaces, and even the military.

Corporate Chair Massage helps build teamwork

The most common injuries related to movement, exercise and somatics are strains and sprains. Let’s explore these as well as the seven common injuries described above.

Sprains are injuries to ligaments, the connective tissue that  connects bones in a joint. When a person  stretches ligaments past their limits deformormation or tears can take place.

Strains are injuries to muscle fibers or tendons, which attach muscles to bones. The common term used to describe this is a “pulled muscles”: Over-stretching or overusing a muscle causes tears in the muscle fibers or tendons.

To understand why sprains and strains happen one must underdtand the structure of ligaments and muscle-tendon units.  In a sense they function the way a shock absorber does on a car. The tissue respond to stress, in this case lengthening and then it  returns to its normal length — unless it is pulled too far out of its normal range.”

1. Ankle sprain: If you have engaged in any of the movement and somatic specialties we have been exploring; exercise, dance, gymnastics, martial artists or yoga it is likely that you have experienced a sprained ankle. This usually happens  when the foot turns inward. This turning stretches or tears the relatively weak ligaments on the outside of the ankle.
