An important breakthrough in this work was Ideokinesis. This is an approach to the improvement of human posture and body movement, in which visual and tactile-kinesthetic imagery guide the student toward healthier form. It is a discipline that employs the use of images as a means of improving muscle patterns.
Mabel Elsworth Todd (1880 – 1956) conceived the ideokinesis approach and Barbara Clark, Lulu Sweigard, and others contributed to its early evolution, later, André Bernard, Irene Dowd, Erick Hawkins, Pamela Matt, Eric Franklin and others lent their influence.

Todd’s ideas initially found a following in the 1930s amongst dancers and health professionals. Herideas involved using anatomically based, creative visual imagery and consciously relaxed volition to create refined neuromuscular coordination. Lulu Sweigard, who coined the term Ideokinesis, and Barbara Clark furthered Todd’s work.
Todd’s work was published in her book ‘The Thinking Body’ (1937), which is now considered by modern dance schools to be a classic study of physiology and the psychology of movement. Her work influenced many somatic awareness professionals of her day, and is often cited along with The Feldenkrais method for its focus on the subtle influence of unconscious intention and attention.
Sweigard, Todd’s student. borrowed the word ideokinesis, composed by two Greek words: ideo (thought) and kinesis (movement), from Bonpensière, a piano teacher, who applied imagery to his methodology. Ideokinesis can be translated roughly as “the image or thought as facilitator of movement”.[
